Savannah, Georgia!

Monday, September 10, 2012

Hello!

Woke to another lovely Georgia day; blue sky, a few white, puffy clouds.  We were actually a bit late getting up – almost 7!! – down to breakfast (which isn’t very good, but sufficient for our needs…) and ready to go about 8:30 a.m.  Linda texted, asking if we wanted to go to Savannah, which we certainly did!  Picked her up around 9, and then the drive – probably 15 – 20 minutes – to Savannah from Richmond Hill.

Forsyth Park
Our first stop was Forsyth Park, which is truly lovely!  We parked and took a nice stroll around the perimeter – there are some stunning houses built around the park – as well as a very modern band shell for concerts and several fountains and statues.  The day was beautiful – in the low 70’s with a nice breeze – according to Linda, one of the nicest days they have had since spring!  Obviously, it must be us!

Linda and Friend (Johnny Mercer)
From the park, we headed into the downtown area.  Much of Savannah is built around small squares – very reminiscent of London! – lots of greenery everywhere, and some amazing houses!  We made a brief detour to a cupcake shop (yes, that was my idea!) and finally parked in a parking garage and headed toward the river.  Absolutely beautiful!

In a way, it is a bit like Quebec City, with a “lower” and “upper” town.  In this case, buildings may be entered either from the main street on the “upper” level, or from below, about 4 floors down in the same building.  We walked along the waterfront; beautiful bridge to Hilton Head, SC, several paddle boats that do dinner cruises on the river, as well as a shuttle boat that takes people from downtown Savannah across the river to the convention center and a HUGE Westin hotel.  Decided to have lunch at Vic’s on the River, so entered on the river level and elevatored up to the main dining room.

We were able to get a beautiful table by the window, so we had an amazing view of the river.  Robert had a fabulous tomato bisque with lump crabmeat, followed by a Cesar salad with white anchovies…I did ask him to move to another table, but he refused…Linda had a fried green tomato, bacon and lettuce sandwich with French fries.  I had a crab salad and peach “tower” – it had lump crab meat, a layer of sliced avocado, a layer of diced peaches and a layer of arugula, presented on heirloom tomatoes with a lemon aioli….whew!  Absolutely excellent!!  We did decline dessert.

Walked back to the car and managed to get out of the garage for only $3.00!  Chicago, listen up!!  We dropped Linda off at her house (so she could get some work done; we sincerely appreciate her giving us the grand tour!)  and returned to the hotel for naps.

Back to the Kennedy’s a bit after 6, and we ordered pizza from a local place.  Linda made a good salad, and we had a great meal while watching the men’s final of the U.S. Open…and as the match took almost 5 hours, we didn’t get back to the hotel until 9:30 p.m.!

Tomorrow we’re heading north with binoculars to the Savannah Wildlife Reserve, and then hopefully some laundry time tomorrow afternoon!
More later!
